All Good Things Must Come to an End

With the weekend approaching, Friday would be the start of the end of our Alaskan adventure.  The plan was to drive from Valdez to Tok, where I had found a campground that had a large storage freezer.  We picked up our two boxes of fish at the harbor, knowing they would stay frozen until we could get them into the freezer at Tok.

The drive was pretty, but somewhat uninspiring.  I was hoping to see wildlife of course; but we saw none.  Once in Tok, we got checked into camp and enjoyed a leisurely evening watching movies on the laptop.  Saturday morning arrived and we were on our final drive back into Fairbanks.

Our last day with the RV is always a very busy one.  We have to pack up our things, wash all of the linens and give the motorhome a good cleaning, inside and out.  Refilling the gas and propane is also on the final checklist and as in 2010, the propane was problematic.  So much so, that we had to call the Culberts to come deal with the refill station because of some issue with their tanks.

The issue was rectified and we were off for a farewell dinner at a local Mexican restaurant.  It was a nice evening with their family, enjoying quality time with our friends who made this trip possible.  Again, I was feeling so very fortunate, almost overwhelmed with friendship and love from this family we had only met a few years before . . . thanks to a Craig’s List ad.

After supper they took us to the airport for our red-eye flight home to Milwaukee.  The flights home (Fairbanks to Minneapolis and then Minneapolis to Milwaukee) were uneventful.  We arrived home as scheduled, with our fish still frozen solid for the roughly 24 hours since leaving Tok the morning before.

Our 2014 Great Alaskan RV Adventure 2 spanned 16 days and encompassed a variety of modes of transportation!  In addition to the motorhome, we travelled by small bush plane to Kennecott and enjoyed marine time on the water.  And let’s not forget the small van ride back from McCarthy to Chitina.  Every time I take a vacation to Alaska, I feel the pull even stronger for the next trip.  It’s like there is always going to be more people to meet, places to see, and experiences to have.

Until next time!
